What is The Red Tent Project?

The Red Tent Project brings menstrual and hormonal health into the open in a respectful, practical way. Many women manage monthly symptoms, fatigue, pain, or mood changes alongside demanding duties, training, and deployment. This project exists to make those challenges easier to manage through education, peer support, and clear signposting, without judgement or awkwardness.

Sessions are designed to feel non-clinical and supportive, and focus on practical approaches that servicewomen can use immediately.

What to expect at a Red Tent session

  • Practical menstrual and hormonal health education tailored to military contexts
  • Strategies for managing symptoms during training, exercises, deployment, and shift patterns
  • Conversation that reduces stigma and isolation (no pressure to share personal details)
  • Clear signposting to further support routes where needed
  • Take-away resources and starter materials

Why This Support is Needed

Servicewomen tell us that menstrual and hormonal health is often treated as something to cope with quietly, even when symptoms affect sleep, energy, mood, confidence, or physical comfort. The Red Tent Project exists to provide preventative support and accessible education in a format that feels safe, normal, and useful.

This project supports two key programme outcomes:

  1. Improved access to advice and support that reduces wellbeing risks
  2. Improved education on servicewomen’s health challenges

The Stats

Over 90% of women report experiencing menstrual-related symptoms, and around half say these symptoms negatively affect their ability to work or train.

Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), Menstruation and the workplace, 2019

Nearly half of women say they feel uncomfortable talking about menstruation in professional environments, even when symptoms are severe.

Plan International UK, Break the Barriers: Girls’ Experiences of Menstruation, 2018

Research in physically demanding occupations shows that menstrual cycle symptoms are associated with increased fatigue, pain, and injury risk when unsupported.
