Who it’s for
Families of wounded, injured, or sick (WIS) veterans, including partners, spouses, parents, carers, and children.
What it is
Peer-to-peer family mentorship combined with group and individual talk therapy, workshops, and ongoing support.
What is the Families Together Programme?
Families Together is a funded support programme pairing families newly adjusting to life with a wounded, injured, or sick veteran with families who have already navigated similar challenges. Through structured mentorship and access to professional talk therapy, families gain guidance, resilience, and hope during a difficult transition.
How it works
1. Referral and assessment
Families can self-refer or be referred by welfare teams, charities, or professionals. Each family completes an initial assessment to understand their circumstances, needs, and stage of transition.
2. Family mentorship matching
Newly adjusting families are paired with “mentor families” who have lived experience of similar challenges. Matches are made carefully to ensure shared experiences and compatibility.
3. Ongoing support and therapy
Families take part in regular mentor catch-ups, group sessions, and access professional talk therapy where needed. Support is flexible and tailored to each family’s situation.
What support looks like in practice
Families taking part in Families Together may access:
- One-to-one family mentorship with trained peer families
- Monthly group mentorship sessions (in-person or online)
- Bi-weekly group talk therapy led by qualified therapists
- One-to-one counselling for family members who need additional support
- Quarterly workshops focused on communication, coping strategies, and resilience
- Access to a digital resource hub with recorded sessions and self-help materials

Why This Support is Needed
Families of wounded, injured, or sick veterans often face sudden and profound changes to daily life, identity, finances, and family roles. Many experience isolation, uncertainty, and emotional strain, particularly in the early stages of transition.
Evidence from organisations such as the Royal British Legion and Combat Stress highlights that families frequently feel underprepared for these changes and lack access to ongoing peer and mental health support. Strong family support networks are consistently linked to better recovery outcomes for veterans, yet structured opportunities for families to connect with others who “have been there” are limited.
Families Together exists to close this gap by combining lived-experience mentorship with professional mental health support, helping families feel less alone, more informed, and better equipped to move forward together.
Get Involved
Families Together is built on connection, shared experience, and timely support. There are several ways to get involved, depending on your situation or role.
For families
If you are part of a family supporting a wounded, injured, or sick veteran and are finding the transition difficult, you can self-refer to the programme. Families Together offers a supportive, non-judgemental space to connect with others who understand military life and to access professional support where needed. You do not need to be in crisis to take part.
For professionals and organisations
If you work with veterans or military families and would like to refer a family, we welcome referrals from welfare teams, charities, healthcare professionals, schools, and community organisations. We are happy to discuss whether the programme is suitable and how it can complement existing support.
For mentor families
We are also interested in hearing from families who have lived through similar challenges and feel ready to support others. Mentor families receive guidance, training, and ongoing support from our team and play a vital role in helping newly adjusting families feel less alone.
