What is the Settling In Support Roadshow?

Families on the Move is a 12-month mobile support project designed to help Armed Forces families settle into unfamiliar locations following relocation.

Relocation is a routine part of military life, but it often brings disruption to family relationships, wellbeing, and access to support. Many families report that the first weeks after a move are the most challenging, particularly before new routines, social networks, and local knowledge are established.

This project delivers 24 community-based roadshow events, timed to align with known relocation cycles. Each event provides a welcoming, non-clinical space where families can:

  • Access early wellbeing and relationship support
  • Receive practical, location-specific information
  • Connect with other newly arrived families
  • Be signposted to local services and activities

The roadshow format ensures support is brought directly into communities, reducing barriers to engagement and helping families feel connected, informed, and supported from the outset of their new posting.

What Happens at a Roadshow Event?

Each Families on the Move roadshow includes:

  • Short-form wellbeing and relationship support delivered by qualified practitioners
  • Informal peer connection spaces for families to meet others in similar situations
  • Local information hubs covering schools, childcare, healthcare, activities, and community services
  • Printed and digital settling-in resources tailored to the local area

Events are free to attend and open to families who have relocated within the previous weeks or months.

Why This Support is Needed

Frequent relocation is one of the most significant pressures facing Armed Forces families.

Research consistently shows that moves can negatively impact wellbeing, social connection, and access to support, particularly in the early stages after arrival. Families often report:

  • Difficulty finding local services and activities
  • Increased feelings of isolation and loneliness
  • Strain on relationships during periods of adjustment
  • Uncertainty about where to seek help or advice

Evidence from national surveys highlights that a significant proportion of Service families experience challenges following relocation, with early intervention shown to reduce longer-term stress and prevent issues from escalating.

Families on the Move responds directly to this need by offering early, accessible, and preventative support, focused on the critical window when families are least connected and most in need of reassurance and guidance.

How Families Have Shaped This Project

This project has been developed in response to feedback from Armed Forces families who have experienced relocation.

Families told us that:

  • The early weeks after a move are the hardest
  • Support often comes too late, once problems have escalated
  • Non-clinical, community-based support feels more accessible
  • Meeting other families in similar situations reduces isolation

Their experiences directly informed the roadshow format, the timing of events, and the emphasis on early, face-to-face engagement in welcoming settings.
